Knock the Vote
I recently watched a video clip featuring a group of elderly citizens discussing the importance of voting. They try to get the point across that young people should go out and vote, even though the message they portray is for them not to vote. They keep saying don't vote, it's ok because if the young people don't vote, they older generation will continue to be the only ones voting. They stress that they vote because they care and it's important to their generation, but does not seem as important to the younger generation. So what they were really saying was, that it's important for the younger generation to vote because the current day issues are different and that if we want to stand up for our issues and opinions we should all vote.
I am also not sure how effective this video will be with regards to persuading the youth of America to vote. The Elders took a cynical approach to encourage youth, which may be misunderstood. They sarcastically say that there is no use in voting. They said that the young generation is a generation of winers, who would rather discuss issues, than go out and fix them. They said that upcoming issues such as global warming and school shootings are the next generations problems, not theirs. They also said that voting should not be left to people who do not understand current day issues.
Some youth watching this may have gotten mixed signals from this video, and the tone used. Some youth also tend to ignore the advice of Elders, because they have a different mindset, and do not understand them. Overall, the concept of encouraging youth to give their political opinions by voting is great, but the message may not have been clear. I do think that the short video was a great idea to reach out to youth, no matter the level of impact it may have had.
This ad explains that those who vote are the only people who will be heard. Every vote will make an impact and a difference in the election and who gets chosen to represent their community.

I agree with your point in regards to the video promoting young people's voting, although I think that the video would be very effective for this cause.. I think that the harsh tones and comments displayed and said in the video will prompt young people to vote rather than the opposite because if young people tend to defy the advice of elders, they would want to prove a point by voting to show that they are relevant in elections. Overall, I see the same perspective as you do, that the video encourages voting, but I think that it is very effective in making young people think twice about voting rather than remaining silent.
