Nike Takes a Knee with Kaepernick

At the end of the day, every business is striving to create profit, no matter how large. Companies, such as Nike, gain publicity and notice from connecting to their customers. Recently, Nike took a stand, by hiring Colin Kaepernick, former NFL player for the San Fransisco 49ers. Colin Kaepernick is most famous for his pre-game actions, where he kneels for the national anthem. Kneeling during the anthem was his way of bringing notice to racism in America. Many fans turned their backs on him, while others praised him for his courageous actions. After Kaepernick was fired, Nike hired him for their brand. He is now the face of Nike's ad, where they promote believing in, and achieving dreams.

 Since then, there has been a controversy of opinions. Some people agree with Kaepernick's actions, in protest, while others are reacting harshly. Many people continue to post pointless videos of burning their Nike attire and shoes, as an act of boycotting the brand. There is really no use in burning good quality materials because of a symbol. Regardless, Colin Kaepernick has started a movement across the nation. Not only to stand up for racism, but to stand up for your beliefs, and not to turn a blind eye to an issue because that's what is expected of you.

Nike's overall campaign is to promote confidence in actions, whether sports related or not. Nike uses athletes to promote their campaign because they are an athletic clothing brand. Colin Kaepernick is a perfect candidate to represent the brand, despite the risk, Nike is taking by choosing him to represent their brand. Not only was he a professional athlete, but he took a stand for his beliefs regarding racism, even though he had to sacrifice his career for it. Nike is also an advocate for unity and inclusivity, which Kaepernick is supporting. The public's response to Nike's ad does not change my opinion about this situation. I believe that racism is a real issue and it should have more attention brought towards it. Therefore, I believe that Colin Kaepernick is supporting a good cause. No matter how people are responding, Nike made a great decision my signing Kaepernick for their ad.

The Politics of Food Guides

After reading the Politics of Food Guides by Daniel Swartz, I now have new insights about how politics have really played a role in the evolution of Canada’s Food Guides. “ For 70 years, the issuing of government food guides in Canada has been about more than just nutrition and health ”(Swartz, 1). As the article states, government food guides have never been purely about the concern for the health of Canadians, due to political influences. It is disappointing to know that the government values our health, less than I thought they would have. It simply isn’t fair to give false, or partially true information to the public, especially on behalf of the government, which people would expect to be a reliable source. I think that Nike was truly trying to support a worthy cause, and even if they were trying to turn over a profit, it still doesn't take away from the company using its power to raise awareness of racism in America. Nike knew that their advertisement could potentially offend a large group of people, but they also knew that standing in solidarity with Kaepernick would result in larger, positive repercussions with regards to racism awareness.
