FAKE NEWS is NO NEWS

As social media becomes more and more popular, the internet continues to make it easier for people to share news, and other information. The goal of fake news is to draw attention to faulty information, and make people believe that it's true. Fake news can easily be mistaken for real news, and it can cause serious damage. This is why it's important to know the difference between real and fake news, when reading online.

How can we tell if a story is real or not? We can tell by checking the source, the author, and the date. When I read important information online, I try to analyze the source, author, date, and etc. I ask myself questions like who posted this? Does this story have legit sources? Is there more to the story than what's here? Then, if I am skeptical about the truthfulness of the story, I look further into it. I do this by looking at the author, their intentions, and other reliable sources verifying the story.

An example of fake news that I saw was a recent April fools prank, where the news that Disney is building a massive resort in the Toronto Islands, was falsely spread online. This rumour started when the website, Daily Hive, posted an article that Disney would be opening a resort in Toronto, which soon spread all over the internet, and all over Toronto. This news had Torontonians completely ecstatic, but their hope was soon ruined when the article was proven false. This article was undeniably false, and proven by many other reliable websites. It has been said that the purpose of this false news was an attempted April fools prank, but nobody seemed to find it very funny. Although this example does not effect us in the worst way, as other news can, it helps conclude that fake news can be awful, and leave lots of people upset and can cause damage. Therefore, it is more important than ever to know the difference between real and fake news.

  1. I agree that news is very easily spreadable because of media and it also makes it very easy for anyone to write something then post it as facts. I also think it is good to look for real or fake news because it can cause many problems to not only you, but many others as well. I like your recommendations and tips on how to spot fake news and I think that it could help me and a lot of people distinguish between real and fake news. Lots of news online can be considered a joke or for fun but they don't realize that it could affect many and could go the wrong way very quickly.

  2. With social media, everyone has a platform to speak up which can be both detrimental and beneficial so I like that you pointed that out. Information can be spread very quickly but whether it is the right information is tricky to tell. I didn't hear about that April Fools prank but I can only imagine what reactions were like. It's also important how you mentioned the methods of how to examine if news is fake or not because with the current world we live I, headlines, true or false, seem to be becoming more outlandish by the day.
