Unit 6: Commenting

I couldn't agree more! I think that Nike was truly trying to support a worthy cause, and even if they were trying to turn over a profit, it still doesn't take away from the company using its power to raise awareness of racism in America. Nike knew that their advertisement could potentially offend a large group of people, but they also knew that standing in solidarity with Kaepernick would result in larger, positive repercussions with regards to racism awareness. It is so important that we take a stand for what we believe in and make a difference in our society. I stand by Nike and their decision to sponsor Colin Kaepernick in his protest.

I agree! The whole purpose of this video ad, is to use reverse psychology to encourage youth to vote. Voting is not simply filling out a ballet, but getting involved in the community, becoming familiar with current day issues, and looking to appoint a leader that suits the common needs of the community. Unfortunately, this video also did not have a big impact on me, because I cannot legally vote. However, it did inspire me to get to know more about politics, and learn more about what I would want in a government. I hope this video has had the same effect on others as it has had on me, and I hope that this encourages young people to get involved in politics, as elders simply do not understand current-day issues.

I definitely agree. Although social media has negative effects, I could almost say that about anything. With regards to social media, I think it has done more good than bad. As you said, it creates jobs, and a great way for us to communicate globally. Social media is common ground for most people today, and can help us connect, and communicate with each other. Through social media, we can portray ourselves as however we want, and are free to express ourselves. Social media has also made it easier for us to communicate with our peers, and provides a sufficient source of communication.

This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed, and I definitely agree with you. Even though my Catholic religion believes otherwise, I believe that women should have the right to make decisions about your body. Although abortion is nothing to be happy about, neither are unwanted births and pregnancy, that may soon be banned. If we already have children in foster care and without families, why would we want to increase that rate? If a woman is not ready to have a baby, and the baby is not guarantee a proper life, then it should be the mother’s decision, not the state’s. With abortions legally banned, unsafe/ illegal abortions will cause serious health threats. Lastly, it simply isn’t fair to have no exceptions for rape and incest with this new law, and force women to carry out a full-term pregnancy.

Fake news has been proven a big issue with regards to information shared over the internet. As you said, it is crucial to look further into sources, authors, and any other additional information, to fully distinguish fake information from real information. It is such a shame that people feel the need to spread rumours online, and that we blindly believe whatever we read. Posting false news can cause all sorts of damage, and in some cases, can turn us against each other. We should not be using the internet to trick others into believing false information, and it is very disappointing that we really have to look into sources before we believe anything online.
I definitely agree. As you said, one of the main reasons we may not see these cultural costumes as offensive, is because we have never been taught that they could be. At a young age, we see these costumes, and think nothing of them. Maybe if I had been introduced to offensive halloween costumes at a young age, I would be more aroused by the thought of it. Personally, I would not find my culture being represented in a costume as offensive, but I can’t say the same for people who are passionate about their cultures, and wish to not be discriminated through costumes.
