My Comments

Unit 6: Commenting http://ericachomedia.blogspot.com/2019/01/nike-takes-knee-with-kaepernick_27.html#comments . I couldn't agree more! I think that Nike was truly trying to support a worthy cause, and even if they were trying to turn over a profit, it still doesn't take away from the company using its power to raise awareness of racism in America. Nike knew that their advertisement could potentially offend a large group of people, but they also knew that standing in solidarity with Kaepernick would result in larger, positive repercussions with regards to racism awareness. It is so important that we take a stand for what we believe in and make a difference in our society. I stand by Nike and their decision to sponsor Colin Kaepernick in his protest. https://sitetheblog.blogspot.com/2018/11/youth-should-not-vote.html I agree! The whole purpose of this video ad, is to use reverse psychology to encourage youth to vote. Voting is not simply filling out a ballet, bu...

The Politics of Food Guides

Image
After reading the Politics of Food Guides by Daniel Swartz, I now have new insights about how politics have really played a role in the evolution of Canada’s Food Guides. “ For 70 years, the issuing of government food guides in Canada has been about more than just nutrition and health ”(Swartz, 1). As the article states, government food guides have never been purely about the concern for the health of Canadians, due to political influences. It is disappointing to know that the government values our health, less than I thought they would have. It simply isn’t fair to give false, or partially true information to the public, especially on behalf of the government, which people would expect to be a reliable source. With all of the health concerns today, I find it upsetting that the source by which some Canadians rely on to live a healthy lifestyle through nutrition, is heavily impacted by politicians who are solely concerned for the wellbeing of their businesses. “ The Grocery Prod...

FAKE NEWS is NO NEWS

Image
As social media becomes more and more popular, the internet continues to make it easier for people to share news, and other information. The goal of fake news is to draw attention to faulty information, and make people believe that it's true. Fake news can easily be mistaken for real news, and it can cause serious damage. This is why it's important to know the difference between real and fake news, when reading online. How can we tell if a story is real or not? We can tell by checking the source, the author, and the date. When I read important information online, I try to analyze the source, author, date, and etc. I ask myself questions like who posted this? Does this story have legit sources? Is there more to the story than what's here? Then, if I am skeptical about the truthfulness of the story, I look further into it. I do this by looking at the author, their intentions, and other reliable sources verifying the story. An example of fake news that I saw was...

My Culture Is Not A Costume

Image
In today's society, we are trying more and more to become a welcoming and inclusive community. Racism, and discrimination play big roles in this and it's great that we are bringing much more attention to these issues than ever before. I recently watched a video titled  My Culture Is NOT A Costume,  which brings attention to offensive  cultural Halloween costumes. In this video  Teen  Vogue asks six women of different cultural backgrounds, about their opinions on cultural costumes. These women express that although these costumes may just be for fun, they take great offence to it.  Personally, I think that bringing awareness to cultural discrimination is great, but this topic may have gone a bit overboard. I understand why people get offended when their culture is portrayed in a negative light or is deliberately made fun of, but I also believe that wearing something from somebody else culture can be a form of flattery. I never thought wearing a hu...

Knock the Vote

Image
I recently watched a video clip featuring a group of elderly citizens discussing the importance of voting. They try to get the point across that young people should go out and vote, even though the message they portray is for them not to vote. They keep saying don't vote, it's ok because if the young people don't vote, they older generation will continue to be the only ones voting. They stress that they vote because they care and it's important to their generation, but does not seem as important to the younger generation.  So what they were really saying was, that it's important for the younger generation to vote because the current day issues are different and that if we want to stand up for our issues and opinions we should all vote. After watching this video, I was not really sure how to feel about it, but I do understand the point they were trying to get across. If young people do not go out and vote, or have any political opinion, than the older gene...

Nike Takes a Knee with Kaepernick

Image
At the end of the day, every business is striving to create profit, no matter how large. Companies, such as Nike, gain publicity and notice from connecting to their customers. Recently, Nike took a stand, by hiring Colin Kaepernick, former NFL player for the San Fransisco 49ers. Colin Kaepernick is most famous for his pre-game actions, where he kneels for the national anthem. Kneeling during the anthem was his way of bringing notice to racism in America. Many fans turned their backs on him, while others praised him for his courageous actions. After Kaepernick was fired, Nike hired him for their brand. He is now the face of Nike's ad, where they promote believing in, and achieving dreams. Since then, there has been a controversy of opinions. Some people agree with Kaepernick's actions, in protest, while others are reacting harshly. Many people continue to post pointless videos of burning their Nike attire and shoes, as an act of boycotting the brand. There is really ...
